THE NEW ARGJAHAMAR SCHOOL
The Argjahamar School was officially handed to Tórshavn Municipality on July 14th 2011. The school – as a state of the art building - is the pride of Tórshavn and has also become a model for future generations of Faroese schools.
Following a prequalification round, 5 companies were invited to tender for the school and on July 4th 2008 ArtiCon was awarded the tender. The building owners insisted on using a partnering scheme, which was established in the Partnering Scheme Contract of October 10th 2008.
The selected architect firm was MAP.
The school was built using all the latest techniques, including the highest level of energy efficiency. Also, meticulous attention was paid to sound levels and lighting in order to ensure a pleasant and comfortable environment for teachers and pupils.
The school was built with two tracks for pupils in grades 1 to 9, as well as a smaller after school club. The size of the school is 7,000 m2 capable of accommodating up to 450 pupils and 50 teachers.
In accordance with the Faroese school legalisation, the school is divided into three education facilities, each with its staff facilities, whilst the fourth building is a double gymnastic hall. Each education building is a separate unit with recreation areas for the teachers. Special education services and the school administration are located below the teaching areas united by a set of stairs. The four buildings are brought together by shared facilities with a front hall and assembly hall.
Work commenced on May 20th 2009. ArtiCon co-operated with companies like Install, Demich, Inntakt, painting firm Ansgar Hansen and the flooring company Gólvbúni
Co-operation with all parties involved was particularly smooth, to the great satisfaction of the supervising body and owner of the School, Tórshavn Municipality.
