New route between Hvannasund and Viðareiði
On September 19th 2013, Landsverk issued a tender to determine who should construct a tunnel and the required access roads opening a new route to Viðareiði. Four companies tendered. The joint venture ArtiCon and LNS submitted the most cost-effective bid.
On June 23rd, 2014, the Minister responsible at the time, Jørgin Niclasen, broke the ground for the new tunnel and in July 2015 Elinborg Thomasen detonated the final blast inni í Dølum opening the tunnel mouth between Hvannasund and Viðareiði.
This tunnel is 1,941 metres long and the access roads are 3,722 metres long. The new stretch of the route totals 5,663 metres.
The works were carried out as a joint venture with the Norwegian company LNS, which bored, blasted and secured the tunnel, while ArtiCon was in charge of transporting tunnel material, supplying shotcrete and constructing the tunnel mouths. In addition, ArtiCon was in charge of removing greensward, building and preparing the new roads for asphalting.
On Friday September 2nd 2016, a celebration marked the official opening of the Viðareiði Tunnel, seven months ahead of the deadline for completing the works.
